Is the TerraPan a drum?
A TerraPan is not a drum. A drum is a percussion instrument consisting of a hollow shell or cylinder with a drumhead stretched over one or both ends that is beaten with the hands or with some implement (such as a stick or wire brush). A TerraPan is closest to an idiophone in that the entire instrument vibrates when each note is struck. However, the handpan also has some properties of a membranophone (like drums) in that steel acts as a membrane that holds a certain tension to produce its pitches. Some aspects of the handpan are also like that of an aeorphone such as the low bass frequencies produced by the air chamber as well as wafting effects created by manipulating sound vibrations with the hands.
